Moscow agrees to talks and bombs Kyiv within hours, Washington’s
envoy calls Putin “a humanitarian”, and an AI-found PHP flaw sends
websites offline across Europe.
Trilateral
talks set for early November; Zelensky accepts a frontline ceasefire
line
Russia has agreed to a Ukraine–US–Russia meeting at team level,
tentatively set for early November, with Abu Dhabi named as the likely
venue. Zelensky confirmed the format and said a ceasefire along current
front lines is “the real way to end it”. US envoy Steve Witkoff flew
from St Petersburg to Oslo for talks at Gardermoen with Prime Minister
Støre and, separately, with Zelensky, who also addressed the Storting.
Rubio called the Oslo meetings “positive”; DN’s sources say the
Zelensky–Witkoff session was at times tense. Støre confirmed broad
agreement but said “much work remains”, and Trump told Ukraine it is
“time to stop the war”.
The framing coming out of Moscow is harder to stomach. Witkoff told
Putin, who is wanted by the ICC for war crimes, “you are a humanitarian
… I salute that”. Putin then ordered the release of the American teacher
Stephen Hubbard, 74, jailed since 2022, without a prisoner exchange. In
Berlin, Merz said the US is “no longer participating in the defense of
Ukraine” and warned that forcing Ukraine to surrender would be a defeat
for all of Europe. (Norwegian reactions in Norway)
Russia
fires missiles at Kyiv hours after agreeing “in principle” to talks
Moscow said it was “ready in principle” to resume negotiations, and
Trump declared the world “the closest we’ve been” to ending the war.
Overnight on 21–22 October, Russia launched 210 drones together with
Iskander-M, Zircon, Oniks and S-400 missiles. In Kyiv, one person was
killed and 22 injured, including four children. An ambulance station and
six ambulances were destroyed in Pecherskyi district, the Pivdennyi
Bridge was damaged, and the metro Green Line was suspended. Drone
strikes near Kharkiv killed two people, Chernihiv was hit twice with
Banderol drone-missiles, and energy infrastructure in Vinnytsia and
Poltava oblasts was damaged. Air defences downed 181 drones. Ukraine,
for its part, sent more than 630 drones toward Moscow. (More in Ukraine)
PHP2Shell:
AI-found RCE in PHP sends websites offline worldwide
The first finding from OpenAI’s Patch the Planet initiative,
run with Trail of Bits, Calif and HackerOne, is a pair of critical PHP
flaws: CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, branded “PHP2Shell”. Both
are CVSS 9.2 vulnerabilities that allow unauthenticated remote code
execution across PHP 5–8. The BBC calls them the most significant
vulnerabilities AI has found so far, in a language that runs about 70%
of the world’s websites. Patches landed on 21 October (8.3.36, 8.4.27,
8.5.12), and nixpkgs PR #576853 bumps all three branches. Norwegian and
other European public-sector sites were taken offline, and NSM is urging
organisations to prepare for emergency patching.
A counter-analysis tempers the panic. Most circulating exploits
silently assume a prerequisite bug such as local file inclusion, and
they fail against standard installs. The author concludes that this is
not a Log4Shell moment, and notes that LLM-generated “exploits” often
work only because they modify the test environment. (More in Tech)
LiteLLM
1.107.0 was a supply-chain attack aimed at AI keys — rotate credentials
if you ran it
Attackers took over GitHub CLI credentials for three LiteLLM
developers, bypassed branch protection, and redirected the release CI to
a lookalike repo. They then pushed trojanized wheels to PyPI. Three
files injected through maturin’s data = directive
auto-execute at every Python startup. cook.py steals SSH
keys, cloud credentials (including live instance metadata), Docker/K8s
secrets, CI tokens, GPG/TLS keys, browser passwords, and specifically
LLM API keys and tool configs for Claude Code and Cursor.
sitecustomize.py runs as an hourly RAT that fetches
arbitrary code. The release was live 10:08–13:23 UTC on 21 October.
Docker tags latest, main-latest and
main-stable stayed compromised until 14:20 UTC.
Check for /tmp/.pc_once_* (the stealer ran) and
/tmp/remote_code_loader.lock (the RAT is or was
running). The same day, Railway disclosed that attackers
decrypted some customer environment variables in what it believes is a
coordinated campaign against AI-provider credentials across several PaaS
platforms.
US
orders diplomats out of Saudi Arabia as Houthis hit Gulf airports, while
plans for new Iran strikes wait for the midterms
The State Department ordered non-emergency diplomats and families to
leave Saudi Arabia, and similar withdrawals are reportedly under way in
the UAE, Jordan, Qatar and Bahrain. A Houthi strike on King Fahd
International Airport in Dammam killed one person and injured eight. The
New York Times reports that US and Israeli officials have drawn up plans
for renewed strikes on Iran, to be considered after the November
elections. Trump denied any Iran talks but said the situation would
resolve “fairly soon”.
New Mexico’s attorney general won a $25 billion judgment against Meta

their data was protected. It is the largest privacy penalty on record:
five times the FTC’s $5 billion settlement, and well above Meta’s
earlier $18 billion settlement with California.

Macron said foreign leaders who face elections, Trump and Netanyahu
by name, are exploiting France’s street protests for domestic gain.
France rejected Trump’s attempt to blame the unrest on migration. Paris
has banned demonstrations in parts of the city on Thursday ahead of
another protest weekend, Italy is sending 500 soldiers to Milan, and
Carrefour cut its annual earnings forecast because of reduced opening
hours and security costs.
The US Embassy in Ottawa officially accused Canadian politicians of

Israel’s
election: Arab parties could decide who governs
With the 27 October election too close to call, Arab parties may win
enough seats to tip the balance against Netanyahu’s coalition.
Historically, low turnout and systemic exclusion have limited their
influence. This time, organised get-out-the-vote campaigns are targeting
that disillusionment. In the West Bank, Israeli forces detained about 80
US, Israeli and British volunteers who were helping Palestinian farmers
harvest olives near Bethlehem. Among them was Brad Lander, the
Democratic congressional nominee in New York. In Washington, AIPAC said
it will stop endorsing candidates and giving directly to campaigns this
cycle. Its super PAC will continue independent spending.

Indonesia’s

Indonesia is in its worst wildfire season in a decade, with more than
1,100 hotspots in the peat forests of Kalimantan and an estimated 1,700
deaths, mostly from smoke inhalation. The government has declined
foreign assistance. Separately, a new UN report finds that current
policies lead to 2.6°C of warming this century, and that getting back on
track would require an 18% cut in global emissions within four
years.

When
Starshield cut out, Ukrainian drones fell from the sky — and Rubio says
access is Musk’s call
A New York Times investigation finds that a deliberate Starshield
outage made Ukrainian military drones crash mid-flight. This follows
yesterday’s reports that Musk personally ordered the slowdown of the
military Starlink service. Secretary of State Rubio has since said that
Ukraine’s access to Starlink is “a decision for Elon Musk”, which
distances the White House from the restrictions. Zelensky, meanwhile,
accuses the US of unfairness and is demanding interceptor missiles.

losses above $2.2 billion. Operators have asked the government for
bailouts and sent an estimated 20,000–25,000 workers on unpaid

«Grotesk»:
at han i 2023 smuglet varmesøkende droner inn i Ukraina gjennom
organisasjonen Fritt Ukraina.

i Kåre Willochs private arkiv. Lederne for Norges Industriforbund,
mer.
kjent. Familien har ikke ønsket å kommentere saken.

langt i liten grad realisert.

prosent uten utflytting. Notatet finner heller ingen nedgang i

TED:
IPv6 tunnels as programmable delay lines for pulsing DoS
Researchers writing on the APNIC blog describe TED (Tunnel
Extension-header DoS), a five-stage technique. It measures RTTs through
misconfigured IPv6 tunnel endpoints using extension headers, then times
injections so that packets from many senders arrive within the same 20
ms window. The result is 180× the sender’s average packet rate, while
each upstream network sees only modest traffic. A scan from June 2025 to
January 2026 found 1.9 million hosts that pass forwarding tests across
six tunnel protocols. There is no patch: tunnel endpoints must filter
extension headers and validate encapsulation.
The
eMudhra CA key leak: browsers revoked it, curl did not
Eight eMudhra intermediate CA private keys were publicly leaked. The
key was literally “4”. Browsers have revoked the certificates, but curl,
many TLS libraries and custom HTTP clients do not check CRLs or OCSP by
default, so they still accept certificates signed with the leaked keys.
Update your trust store
(nix flake update && nixos-rebuild switch) and
audit any non-browser TLS clients. mitmproxy has merged an
--emudhra flag that signs intercepted traffic with the
compromised key, so you can test whether your clients actually reject
it.
musl
libc: integer overflows in regcomp allow heap OOB writes
from a malicious regex
CVE-2026-107891 affects musl 0.5.0–1.2.6. The pattern itself triggers
the bug, not the data being matched, so any application that compiles
untrusted regexes on Alpine or another musl-based system is in scope.
The impact ranges from DoS to possible RCE. Until 1.2.7 ships, accept
regexes only from trusted input.
WorldTUI:
a 360M model that predicts the terminal’s screen, not its text
Simon Edwardsson trained a 360M-parameter model to simulate a
terminal. Instead of generating output text, it predicts screen
deltas for each keystroke. The display is a 2D grid, and the
vocabulary is pruned to 333 tokens (256 byte values plus operations such
as COPY). Each row runs as an independent batch element, which cuts
latency from 6.7 s to 0.87 s on an RTX 4090. DAgger-style training
teaches the model to repair its own mistakes. It was trained on 336k
synthetic sessions with randomized personas and filenames, it handles
vim, tmux and snake, and it runs in the browser.
Postgres
recovery_prefetch considered harmful
recovery_prefetch, which is on by default in recent
Postgres, turns large sequential WAL reads on standbys into 8 KB random
reads. That can multiply IOPS demand up to 16× and exhaust cloud disk
limits. A standby that falls behind switches to WAL-restore mode and
does not resume streaming until it catches up. With synchronous
replication, that blocks every write on the primary. A network blip
under modest write load is enough to reproduce it. The author recommends
turning the setting off.

A newly proposed algorithm claims to multiply integers in strictly
sub-n log n time. That would beat the 2019 Harvey–van

settles one of the classic questions in complexity theory.

Nix 3.23.3: privilege escalation fix, baked flakes, fiber-based parallel
eval
The critical fix, which landed in 3.23.2: untrusted users could pass
--repair to the daemon and replace arbitrary store paths, a
local privilege escalation when the daemon runs as root. A macOS sandbox
escape and an out-of-bounds access in builtins.genList are
also fixed. New features:
nix flake bake precomputes all output derivations into
outputs.json, so later builds do almost no evaluation.
- OpenTelemetry traces for evaluations and builds.
- Parallel evaluation uses fibers instead of blocking threads, which
cuts GC lock contention by about 65%.
- Zero-copy file cloning.
A Discourse proposal argues that the daemon should drop
allowed-users and trusted-users entirely and
leave authentication to the OS, through socket permissions and PAM.
PSA: systemd is becoming
kernel-bound
New systemd versions ship eBPF programs (nsresourced,
mountfsd, BPF-LSM helpers) built against the kernel’s BTF.
BTF CO-RE cannot make these fully portable, so in NixOS systemd moves
into config.boot.kernelPackages.systemd, like ZFS or
nvidia. The default has not changed yet (PR #569868). To opt in now and
get the unprivileged-container features, set
systemd.package = config.boot.kernelPackages.systemd;.
Packagers should use systemdLibs in
buildInputs (about 100 MB smaller closure) and look up
systemd-escape at runtime.

which is not post-quantum safe. Encrypted blobs in a public repo are
therefore a harvest-now-decrypt-later target. The write-up moves secrets
into a private git repo that is imported as a flake input, so no
ciphertext ever reaches the public config. Elsewhere, a school runs 12
Tuxedo laptops as a NixOS fleet: nixos-anywhere for provisioning, disko
for disk layout, impermanence for a home directory that is wiped on
reboot, and comin for updates on git push.
