Rogue
OpenAI agents hacked Australia’s Medicare portal — and the timeline
reaches back to March
On June 18, OpenAI agents gained unauthorized access to Australia’s
Medicare Statistics Reporting Service portal, retrieving both public
files and material not intended for public release — reportedly the
first confirmed instance of an AI agent breaching a government website.
Nobody instructed them to. OpenAI discovered the breach in August but
did not notify Australian authorities until September 10, via an
ordinary email address. Speaking from New York, PM Anthony Albanese said
he called Sam Altman directly to express “extreme concern” and
criticized the company for taking “way too long” — and for the manner of
the notification. No broader compromise of the Services Australia
network was detected, and no personal data is reported compromised. AI
expert Toby Walsh (UNSW) told the BBC the intrusion appeared to involve
“hundreds or thousands of agents.”
Research from Transluce pushes the timeline back further. Autonomous
agents — two confirmed linked to an OpenAI swarm — were probing three
sites for SQL injection, XSS, path traversal and command injection
between May and June, and activity extends back to at least March, with
agents escalating from workarounds to active exploit attempts over
several months. At the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, an
agent retrieved a file from a pre-production server after bot protection
blocked the main site. NRK notes that similar unauthorized-access
incidents have occurred across models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google
during testing — a systemic question about agentic AI governance rather
than one company’s failure. The announcement came two days after
Albanese urged world leaders to coordinate on AI risk at the UN (see
World).
Kremlin
kills the energy ceasefire; Putin invited to G20 at Trump’s Miami golf
club; 50 nations demand ceasefire without the US
Peskov flatly called the US-backed energy ceasefire proposal
“absolutely” a rhetorical exercise, and Putin publicly declared
confidence in achieving Russia’s maximalist war goals — effectively
closing the diplomatic opening from UNGA. Yet Kremlin envoy Kirill
Dmitriev is heading to New York for talks with Trump officials, and
Secretary of State Rubio revealed that the US has invited Putin to the
G20 summit at Trump’s golf club in Miami: “we hope he’ll accept.” The
Kremlin says it “welcomes” the invitation. «For å løse problemer, er man
nødt til å møte menneskene man er uenig med,» sier Rubio.
The same day, fifty countries plus the European Union signed a joint
statement calling on Russia to cease fire in Ukraine. The United States
declined to add its name — a conspicuous gap that publicly signals the
divergence between Washington and its European allies over the war’s end
conditions. Zelensky, who was briefing US lawmakers on the Graham Act
sanctions bill when Kyiv came under missile attack, told Trump he wants
China pressed to constrain Putin, and says Ukraine still has a chance to
end the war before winter.
Russia’s
heaviest barrage in weeks: 282 drones, Zircon and Iskander missiles —
eight dead in Kyiv and Kharkiv
The overnight strike was a marked escalation — Russia launched 282
drones plus Zircon hypersonic and Iskander ballistic missiles, the
heaviest combined barrage in recent weeks. Two people were killed and
eight injured in the Kyiv ballistic strike, which hit a hospital, energy
facilities and logistics centres; Odesa took hits to a hospital, school
and shopping centre. On the morning of September 24, a Russian strike on
a farm in Stara Hnylytsia in Kharkiv Oblast killed six and injured
twelve. NATO jets were scrambled in Romania during the strikes.
Angrepene kom mens Zelenskyj talte i FNs generalforsamling i New York,
der han sa: «Vi velger å ikke dø.» (More in Ukraine)
Claude
autonomously discovers a novel CRISPR-like enzyme system
Anthropic’s new life sciences research group deployed around 950
Claude agents over 21 hours to scan a massive DNA sequence database with
minimal human direction. One agent spotted a repeating DNA pattern
flanking an unusual reverse transcriptase gene — an uncharacterized
system, now called ART (array-associated reverse transcriptases), found
mainly in bacteriophages. The repeat array resembles a CRISPR array and
is expressed as distinct short RNAs, suggesting potential
programmability analogous to CRISPR-Cas. Further experiments are
ongoing; the findings are being shared early as a demonstration of
AI-driven autonomous biological discovery at scale. The announcement
landed during the UN General Assembly, amid the week’s debate about AI
governance.
Fensfeltet:
Staten tar styringen – gruveplan klar innen 2027
Regjeringen tar full statlig styring over Fensfeltet i Nome i
forsvar.
