Iran
damages US aircraft at Jordan base; Brent crosses $100
Multiple US military aircraft were damaged in overnight Iranian
strikes on the Al-Azraq base in Jordan — a concrete escalation beyond
the previous missile barrage on the same base. Iran simultaneously
unveiled an improved ballistic missile, saying it demonstrates readiness
to take “preemptive action against threats.” Brent crude crossed
$100/barrel for the first time since July, a level Trump had vowed to
prevent, following this week’s tanker strikes.
Record-range
drone strikes reach Siberia’s gas heartland, 3,300 km from the
border
Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces struck the Novy Urengoy Gas
Condensate Treatment Plant and the adjacent Purovsky facility in
Yamalo-Nenets — 3,000–3,300 km from the Ukrainian border, the
longest-range strikes of the war. Local residents filmed fires and gas
flaring; ISW confirmed the Novy Urengoy hit. The strikes reportedly used
FP-1 drones from Ukrainian manufacturer Fire Point, and gasoline queues
have since appeared in Yamal itself — in Russia’s own energy
heartland.
Separately, Ukrainian USVs struck Sochi’s waterfront and a drone
ignited fires at the Caspian port of Makhachkala in Dagestan. Russian
troop losses have now surpassed 1.5 million. Bloomberg reports Putin
plans to intensify attacks over winter to test Ukrainian supply chains
and public resolve — a cycle Ukraine is working to pre-empt by extending
its own reach.
Empty
F-16 magazines and a $27B hole in Kyiv; a deficit 53% over forecast in
Moscow — and the Kremlin names its price
Ukraine has nearly exhausted its AIM-120 and AIM-9 missile stocks for
F-16s, per The Economist, while Russia scales jet-powered drone
production toward roughly 3,000 units a month. The overnight barrage of
149 UAVs struck 23 sites across six oblasts, and glide bombs keep
falling systematically on Kramatorsk and Druzhkivka to prepare future
ground advances. Zelensky’s announcement of a $27 billion defense
shortfall through end-2026 has surprised and alarmed European allies,
who are demanding an accounting of where the money went.
Moscow’s books look no better. Russia’s federal deficit reached 5.8
trillion rubles ($68B, 2.5% of GDP) through August — 1.5× the 2025 pace
and already 53% above the full-year target — driven by accelerated
defense contract payments. Non-war spending was cut 35% after an April
cash shortage, and the central bank projects just 1–2% growth for 2027,
all of which Putin is downplaying ahead of State Duma elections on
September 18–20. Analysts have separately flagged an unexplained $12.2
billion gap in Russia’s official balance sheet, raising questions about
shadow capital flows and covert routing of war expenditure.
Into this the Kremlin has told the Trump administration explicitly
that halting US military and financial support for Ukraine would help
bring the war to a close — a public articulation of Moscow’s core
demand, timed to Trump’s own claim that the war ends “right after
midterms.” (Diplomacy also covered in Ukraine)
Trump’s
midterm convention: $5,000 for every American, and the war ends after
November
At the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, Trump pledged a
$5,000 “dividend” to every adult American if Republicans retain both
chambers of Congress — a payment costing over $1 trillion with no
funding mechanism explained. He also claimed the US-Iran war and
elevated oil prices would resolve “right after midterms,” a framing
critics noted conveniently ties military policy to the election
calendar. The convention revealed persistent Republican divisions over
the economy and the unpopular war. Democrat John Fetterman made a
surprise video appearance to back a Republican Senate candidate,
deepening his estrangement from his own party.
Norge tok farvel med kong
Harald V
Titusener fylte Oslos gater under statsbegravelsen for kong Harald V,
(Mer

RSA-260
factored for $400K — RSA-1024 now within reach of well-resourced
attackers
Cognition broke the six-year factoring record by factoring RSA-260
(260 decimal digits, ~860 bits) with a GPU-accelerated General Number
Field Sieve built around a new “world’s highest-performance GPU lattice
siever.” The run took 4,900 GPU-days at roughly $400K. Cognition
projects RSA-1024 could be factored at ~$30M per number with similar
methods — placing keys deprecated since 2013 but still found in legacy
systems plausibly within reach of nation-state actors. RSA-2048, the
current standard, remains ~1 billion times harder and is not
affected.
