LWN surveys the bootstrappable builds movement — building a complete toolchain from a minimal auditable seed to close the “Trusting Trust” attack, where a compromised compiler silently backdoors everything downstream. live-bootstrap documents 182 steps from hex0 (256 bytes) through assembly tools and M2-Planet up to modern compilers. For self-hosted languages without an alternative implementation, like Rust, the approach is archaeological: rebuild old releases chronologically until you reach today. Where reproducible builds verify source → binary, bootstrappable builds verify the whole chain traces back to auditable minimal code.

Could Cargo’s build scheduler be 8% faster? B-level analysis says yes

An empirical study replays recorded Cargo dependency graphs under different scheduling algorithms. The current scheduler runs 9.6% above pseudo-optimum at 4 cores and 2.3% above at 16. A b-level scheduler — prioritising tasks on or near the critical path by computing each task’s longest dependent chain — wins in 15 of 17 projects at n=4 (median 8% improvement) and 14 of 17 at n=16. It is robust too: 60% noise in duration estimates preserves most gains, and plain graph-depth ordering still beats the baseline when no timing data exists.

curl wins its CVE dispute: bug requires illegal hostname plus local attacker

Daniel Stenberg documents a four-month dispute after declining, as curl’s CNA, to assign a CVE to a wildcard-certificate bug that only triggers when the user supplies an illegal hostname with a leading dot and a local attacker is positioned to intercept. MITRE’s TL-Root sided with curl: not a security vulnerability.
