Andrew Kelley delivered a talk at Software Should Work 2026 warning
against the “black pill” — the nihilistic surrender to the idea that
software is irredeemably captured by dark patterns and coercionware. He
traces the black pill’s origins in online incel communities and argues
the same dynamic (productive members leave, despair normalizes, only the
miserable remain) can infect technical communities. The prescription is
to keep faith in human agency and build things that actually work for
people rather than manipulating them. This is a text adaptation of the
talk.
John MacFarlane released Pandoc 0.1 on August 3, 2006 — 20 years ago.
The project now spans 85,684 lines of Haskell, 600+ contributors, and
supports 51 input formats and 76 output formats, including recent
additions like Djot, Typst, and WASM compilation for browser use.
MacFarlane’s retrospective reflects on the choice of Haskell (vindicated
by long-term maintainability), the slow evolution from Markdown↔︎LaTeX to
Jupyter notebook and PowerPoint support, and credits the project with
saving “people all over the world countless hours of drudgery.” Pandoc
remains one of the most quietly foundational tools in technical writing
and publishing pipelines — this newspaper is rendered with it every
morning.

Digital Markets Act forces Google to open Android wake word DSP to Home
Assistant
The European Commission’s July 2026 DMA ruling mandates Alphabet open
11 Android features to third-party assistants, including DSP access for
wake word detection. Google previously forced Home Assistant to run
detection on CPU, raising battery drain from ~1% to ~15% and requiring a
permanent microphone indicator. With DSP access, HA gets the same
efficiency Gemini enjoys. The ruling also allows multiple concurrent
assistants without requiring default-role status. Deadlines: Android 18
(August 2027) for basic access, concurrent wake word detection by August
2028.
FlakeAudit:
turn Nix SBOMs into enforceable CI policy
Determinate Systems releases FlakeAudit, a Rust-native CLI companion
to FlakeBOM that turns CycloneDX SBOMs from passive inventory into
gateable policy. The check subcommand validates against a
flakeaudit.toml enforcing license restrictions (SPDX
expressions), component bans with per-component allowlists,
package-source allowlists, and vulnerability severity thresholds — with
allow/warn/deny tiers for CI
integration. Also includes scan (queries NVD/osv.dev) and
compare for diffing two SBOMs. Ships as a single static
binary and understands Nix-specific metadata like derivers and
evaluation callstacks.
flakeguard:
detect GitHub account takeovers in your flake.lock
nix flake update has one security gap that
flake.lock checksums can’t cover: at the moment fresh code
is fetched, there’s nothing to verify against. flakeguard fills this by
detecting repojacking — GitHub account renames that release the old
namespace for attackers to claim. Its flagship check
(owner_reborn) flags accounts created after their
pinned commit, which is physically impossible legitimately. Also detects
deleted repos, gone accounts, renames, and archived projects. Works
without authentication for GitHub; GitLab/SourceHut have partial
coverage.
herdr
vs cmux: two months on each terminal multiplexer for AI coding
agents
Both tools manage multiple coding-agent sessions in the terminal.
cmux is macOS-native with superior browser integration (native WebKit,
imports existing sessions); herdr runs on the remote machine itself with
an active plugin marketplace. cmux added SSH support in June 2026,
closing its main gap, but the author stayed on herdr for its
reviewr plugin. Verdict: cmux for local Mac dev, herdr for
remote server-based agent work — and herdr is the only option on
Linux.

launcher with fuzzy search — replacing multiple standalone daemons.

PCIe card with ESP32-H2 enables Home Assistant PC power control
A custom PCIe x1 card built around an ESP32-H2 simulates power-button
presses via Zigbee, integrating the desktop PC into Home Assistant
without relying on Wake-on-LAN. The card monitors the real power state
via the PCIe slot’s switched 3.3V rail, so the HA switch self-corrects
if a shutdown command doesn’t land — rather than assuming the command
succeeded. Enables voice commands like “turn on the computer” to trigger
remote desktop sessions.
